Overview

Glide64 is a graphics plugin for N64 emulators such as Project64, 1964 and Mupen64. It uses the 3dfx Glide3x API, and it supports many games. If you don't have a 3dfx card, you can use a Glide Wrapper. This project was started on December 29th, 2001.

Glide64 'Napalm' update

Published tuesday 18 november 2008 by gonetz

Hello,

I have prepared an updated for ‘Napalm’ version. My current goal is to make Glide64 sources portable. This is large and long task. Besides, Windows users will have no benefits from it. Thus, I decided to release this intermediate version. This is ‘Napalm’ + widescreen resolutions support + texture dumping. Due to lack of time no emulation related issues were fixed. Thus, if you don’t have wide monitor or don’t need texture dumping, you may use previous release.

Important note: you must set fullscreen resolution in the wrapper settings before the first run. This version uses different format for resolution variable, and old value stored in the registry will not work.

Glide64 'Napalm' Public Release 1.0

Published wednesday 23 april 2008 by gonetz

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls!

The Glide64 Team proudly presents you the new release of our project – 'Napalm'!

The project now consists of three parts. The main part – Glide64 graphics plugin – was changed a lot since the previous public release. It’s simply impossible to list all modifications. New version has tons of bugfixes and optimizations. Large number of special effects implemented. Lots of hacks removed, because they are not necessary anymore. Lots of previously unplayable games are playable now. Lots of games, which worked good before now work even better. Screen shots of most noticeable improvements were posted on our forum. Check also the updated screen shots gallery.

The second part – Glitch64 glide wrapper – was also changed much. Beside various fixes and optimizations it now supports anisotropic filtering and compressed textures.

The third part – GlideHQ – is a new module, which implements various texture enhancement techniques. It supports 6 texture filters, 7 methods of texture enhancement, 2 methods of texture compression. Beside that it fully supports Rice’s format of Hi-Resolution texture packs, with various optional techniques to save texture memory.

Project related documentation was improved too. We put all useful docs in one file 'Glide64 Info.chm'. Please read 'Readme' part of it, at least first two chapters, with general information and setup instructions.

Due to huge number of changes, new bugs might be introduced too. Despite the intensive beta testing during all period of development, some issues had been found and fixed right before the release. Thus, if you will find an issue, which is not mentioned in the 'Known Issues' part of the documentation, please report about it on our forum.

I gave this version codename 'Napalm'. 'Napalm' is also the codename for VSA-100 graphic chip, on which 3dfx Voodoo 4 and Voodoo 5 series were built. I still use Voodoo 5 in my home PC. This version of the plugin uses a lot of VSA-100 special abilities; therefore it was also named ‘Napalm’. BTW, there are few effects, which you can see only on VSA-100 based cards, or on N64 itself. Check 'Games Tips and Tricks' part of the documentation for details.

GlideHQ - texture enhancements module for Glide64

Published tuesday 21 august 2007 by gonetz

GlideHQ is a new Glide64-related project. This is an auxiliary library, which will be responsible for all texture enhancements. The author of GlideHQ is Hiroshi ‘KoolSmoky’ Morii. First public version of GlideHQ was released a month ago in this thread: http://www.emuxhaven.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6427
Current version is based on Glide64 “Wonder Plus”. Latest released beta can apply various filters, enhancements and compressions to N64 textures. The next goal is to add support for hi-resolution textures packs. First results already can be seen here: http://www.emuxhaven.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6427&page=7

Glide64 Wonder. New update

Published tuesday 12 december 2006 by gonetz

More then a year is passed since previous official release of Glide64. The project is still alive, but I don’t have much time to work on it. I made some improvements, nice but not revolutionary. It’s just another plus to the famous ‘Wonder’ version. Main results:

  • Improvements in hardware frame buffer emulation for Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Tooie, Mickey's Speedway USA
  • Added support for highlighted objects in Perfect Dark. Added support for coronas in this game (requires software depth buffer rendering). Both features are very important for correct emulation. Now Glide64 emulates PerfectDark nearly perfect, only sky is still missing. Needless to say, that all frame buffer based effects work too (there are many of them in this game).
  • Fixed combiners in several games.

Hacktarux's glide wrapper was improved too, and its modifications can be named revolutionary. First of all, it now supports hardware frame buffer emulation! This feature was previously available for 3dfx users only, and now owners of Direct9X cards can enjoy it too. My thanks to mudlord, who helped us to solve several problems during testing of this feature. Note: OpenGL implementation of texture frame buffer is not as efficient as Glide3x one, and it requires much more video memory. Thus, at least 128mb Direct9x video card is required for hardware frame buffer emulation. Please run mudlord’s gltest.exe, placed in wrapper’s folder, to check compatibility of your video card with the wrapper. Second, Hacktarux fixed several old problems in the wrapper:

  • fixed dithered alpha emulation on ATI cards
  • fixed chromakey functions
  • fixed Lens of Truth problem in Zelda MM
  • added some missing combine modes

You may also check mudlord’s unofficial builds of the wrapper in this thread. mudlord did some experimental speed improvements, so may be his builds will work for you better than official one.

And the last thing – "How to install Glide64". This question was asked and answered hundred times already, it’s described in readme.txt, but nevertheless lazy lamers keep asking it again and again. Thus, I wrote this ultimate guide "Glide64 installation for dummies":

  1. Download Glide64 distributive
  2. Unpack it into temporal folder
  3. Go to that temporal folder
  4. Copy Glide64.dll and Glide64.ini from "Plugin" folder into "Plugin" folder of your emulator
  5. If you don't have 3dfx card, copy glide3x.dll from "Hacktarux's glide3x wrapper" into your emulator's folder, where main exe file is placed (main exe is Project64.exe or 1964.exe or mupen64.exe etc)
  6. Run your emulator
  7. In emulator's settings select Glide64 as your video plugin. Push "About" button to see information about the plugin (optional)
  8. Now you need to configure video plugin. Select correspondent option in emulator's settings. In Glide64 configuration dialog select desired screen resolution. If you have fast PC, select 'Depth buffer render' option. For Mupen64 emulator, select 'Get frame buffer info' option. If you don't have 3dfx card, push 'Wrapper' button and select full screen resolution for the wrapper. Press "Ok' button to close configuration dialog
  9. Run a game
  10. If a game does not work well, check 'Glide64 compatibility list.htm' for additional options. If game's status is "Compatible', but it actually does not work - report about it on our forum

Note: if you are using Project64 emulator with the wrapper, you must close the emulator after each game, otherwise you will get an error message.

Serious warning: I’ve put a special code into Glide64. If you will ever again ask “How to install Glide64”, this code will be triggered, and then #25 frame will be rendered and command you to kill yourself up against a wall. After that your computer will explode. You been warned!
