Since I'm very busy, Glide64 development is going very slowly. It does not stopped though, and intermediate WIP versions are regularly released on the message board. These releases do not announced here, so if you want fresh updates, just check this thread from time to time. You will find the change log here too.

Glide64 'Napalm WX' Release 1

Published thursday 20 august 2009 by gonetz

What's new:

1. Glide64 (the plugin)
  • As usual, tons of fixes in many games. It's impossible to list them all.
  • New microcode implemented: "zSort". All games and demos based on this microcode now work.
  • New user interface layout. All settings are now in one interface, including wrapper settings.
  • 3 screen shot formats: BMP, PNG, JPEG.
  • 3 screen aspect modes: 4:3, 16:9, Stretch
2. GlideHQ (the texture enhancer)
  • Bugfixes and optimizations
  • Added "Store" mode to cache all textures without modifications. Since texture cache is persistent and automatically loaded with the game, it improves plugin's performance as N64 textures must be converted into an internal format only once.
3. Glitch64 (the glide wrapper)
  • Removed user interface
  • Removed support for old cards. Your video card MUST support shaders.
  • Removed obsolete options
  • Bugfixes and optimizations

Starting from this version, Glide64 is a multiplatform project. The "WX" suffix in the codename reflects the fact that Glide64 now supports Windows and Unix. If the Glide wrapper and texture enhancer modules were designed to be portable from the start, Glide64 itself was a pure windows application. This new version is powered by the wxWidgets library, which is used for all platform-dependent tasks, like the GUI, threading, file system etc. In theory, Glide64 now can work on all x86 platforms, supported by wxWidgets, namely MS Windows, Unix with GTK+, Unix with Motif, and MacOSX. In practice, the end-user binary release is ready only for MS Windows. Users of other OS, e.g. Linux, must build it manually from sources. This is a temporary situation, caused by lack of time and absence of non-Windows beta testers.

Windows users may download new release and enjoy!

Unix users welcome to the message board.
MacOSX users also welcome to the message board.
Here you will find how to build Glide64 for your OS. Please leave your feedback - it will help us to fix existing problems. Binary releases also will be available to download from the message board first.

In conclusion I want to thank the people, who work with me on this release:

  • Hiroshi 'KoolSmoky' Morii. Hiroshi is not only the author of the most advanced texture enhancement module out there; he also added many improvements and optimizations to the wrapper and the plugin itself. His assistance helped me to solve heap of technical issues, which I met on the road to release.
  • Brad 'mudlord' Miller. Being one of the most active wrapper developers, Brad performed all the work for porting the wrapper to Linux and also helped me with many Linux-specific technical issues.
  • Olivieryuyu. Olivier is the main beta tester for the last several years. He made titanic work, testing all the games again and again in search of issues and their possible solutions. Olivier is a hardcore fan of N64 emulation, and his enthusiasm constantly pushes me forward.
  • Wes 'Legend' McDaniel. Wes plays the role of quality assurance manager. He feels very well, how the user interface should look and work and which features must be implemented for comfortable use of the plugin. If you will find this version more convenient in use, this is thanks to Wes. If not - blame me for not listen all his advices :)

Updates

Published thursday 19 march 2009 by gonetz

KoolSmoky fixed a few bugs in GlideHQ. This is good news by itself. Beside that he also created very useful tool to check for various problems in hi-resolution texture packs. It is highly recommended for all users and especially for designers of hi-resolution texture packs. You can’t imagine how careless texture artists can be and how many issues there are even in most popular and well-designed packs. Download links: GlideHQ update. GlideHQ Hires Texture Checker.

Glide64 'Napalm' update

Published tuesday 18 november 2008 by gonetz

Hello, I have prepared an updated for ‘Napalm’ version. My current goal is to make Glide64 sources portable. This is large and long task. Besides, Windows users will have no benefits from it. Thus, I decided to release this intermediate version. This is ‘Napalm’ + widescreen resolutions support + texture dumping. Due to lack of time no emulation related issues were fixed. Thus, if you don’t have wide monitor or don’t need texture dumping, you may use previous release. Important note: you must set fullscreen resolution in the wrapper settings before the first run. This version uses different format for resolution variable, and old value stored in the registry will not work. Download.

Glide64 'Napalm' Public Release 1.0

Published wednesday 23 april 2008 by gonetz

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! The Glide64 Team proudly presents you the new release of our project – 'Napalm'! The project now consists of three parts. The main part – Glide64 graphics plugin – was changed a lot since the previous public release. It’s simply impossible to list all modifications. New version has tons of bugfixes and optimizations. Large number of special effects implemented. Lots of hacks removed, because they are not necessary anymore. Lots of previously unplayable games are playable now. Lots of games, which worked good before now work even better. Screen shots of most noticeable improvements were posted on our forum. Check also the updated screen shots gallery. The second part – Glitch64 glide wrapper – was also changed much. Beside various fixes and optimizations it now supports anisotropic filtering and compressed textures. The third part – GlideHQ – is a new module, which implements various texture enhancement techniques. It supports 6 texture filters, 7 methods of texture enhancement, 2 methods of texture compression. Beside that it fully supports Rice’s format of Hi-Resolution texture packs, with various optional techniques to save texture memory. Project related documentation was improved too. We put all useful docs in one file 'Glide64 Info.chm'. Please read 'Readme' part of it, at least first two chapters, with general information and setup instructions. Due to huge number of changes, new bugs might be introduced too. Despite the intensive beta testing during all period of development, some issues had been found and fixed right before the release. Thus, if you will find an issue, which is not mentioned in the 'Known Issues' part of the documentation, please report about it on our forum. I gave this version codename 'Napalm'. 'Napalm' is also the codename for VSA-100 graphic chip, on which 3dfx Voodoo 4 and Voodoo 5 series were built. I still use Voodoo 5 in my home PC. This version of the plugin uses a lot of VSA-100 special abilities; therefore it was also named ‘Napalm’. BTW, there are few effects, which you can see only on VSA-100 based cards, or on N64 itself. Check 'Games Tips and Tricks' part of the documentation for details. Download Glide64 'Napalm' from here and enjoy!
